Dear NOMC: As many of you are aware the National Blindness Professional Certification Board has over the past few years developed an approval process for training centers utilizing the Structured Discovery model, and has also been working to refine and revise the process for obtaining the NOMC certification. This has resulted in the development of a more specific apprenticeship program, and some important changes in the examination process, which are still evolving. Members of the NOMCT Committee will be asked to serve two year terms, which will be staggered, allowing an overlap of service among the members. Initially, one half of the appointments to the NOMCT Committee will be asked to serve a one year term, and at the end of their terms, will, as with all committee members, be reappointed by the Board for a two year term, should their ongoing service be deemed appropriate. Job Announcement Structured Discovery Training Coordinator The Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness (PDRIB) at Louisiana Tech University is seeking a full-time Structured Discovery Training Coordinator . The PDRIB fulfills two primary missions: to prepare professionals to work in the field of rehabilitation and education with innovative knowledge about blindness under the Structured Discovery method of instruction; and to conduct research which clarifies and deepens understanding about blindness and the best practices for promoting education, employment, and independence for individuals who are blind or have low vision. The PDRIB is a small, grant-based research and training institute within the College of Education at Louisiana Tech University, located in Ruston, Louisiana. The work of the Institute occurs on the University campus, but also has a nationwide scale. Dear NOMC, You will remember that I talked about the Orientation and Mobility Specialists Association (OMSA) which is a new membership organization of mobility instructors that has been formed. As I mentioned at that time, as part of the bi-laws for the organization, at least two members of the association will hold NOMC. In order for this to occur, however, NOMC need to be interested in participating in this association. I am pasting here the link to the web page where you can register to be a member of this association. Membership dues are $50 annually. I am bringing this to your attention now because so far, very few NOMC individuals have joined the association and the initial meeting to select the first set of board members will be occurring soon. Let me know if you have questions.
