The Touch of Genius Prize was developed to inspire entrepreneurs, educators or inventors to continue the promotion of braille and tactile literacy for blind and deafblind people worldwide. This prize can be granted for innovative and accessible computer software, Android applications, iOS applications, or tactile hardware that promotes braille and/or tactile literacy. NBP encourages all applicants to think outside the box to what can be used to help improve the lives of blind people. The winner of this prize will receive up to $20,000, which will help them to continue to innovate in the fields of technology and education for blind people. Conference call to discuss Proposed O&M Association

Dear NOMC, Since July, 2018, I have been in conversations with a number of individuals who represent the field of O&M, including COMS and guide dogs. These individuals are interested in creating a national membership organization whose purpose is to advance the field of O&M. As part of this association, they seem to be dedicated to the notion of including NOMC as an equal member of the profession. Attached is a document that explains the purpose and scope of this proposed new organization. I, like many of you, have doubts, concerns, and questions. Yet, I have been involved in the drafting of the attached document and have been in conversation with leaders in our field about the pros and cons of NOMC participation in this process, and so I am currently moving forward with cooperation. Because I know that many of you will have similar concerns, questions, and advice, I am scheduling a conference call for next week to discuss this proposal and what it might mean for our profession. The conference call will be Thursday, October 18 beginning at 7:00 p.m. CDT. I will be sending out information on Monday on how to join this conference call. I will plan to record the call if I am able. One additional piece of information that you should know right now is that the persons leading this effort, (including myself) will be attending the SOMA conference in Tampa, Florida, December 8-11, at which time this proposal will be brought to the conference for consideration of adoption. This new organization, if formed, could potentially be of no value to us on the NOMC side of the field, however, there is potential for us to have meaningful input, meaningful control, and a foot in the door of the profession we have not had before Look forward to sharing more with you all next week. Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M) The Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) is seeking an Orientation & Mobility Specialist to provide individualized training to our clients who are blind or visually impaired. The O&M instructor will teach clients to travel safely and independently. Since 1900, CLB's mission has been promoting independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. We provide a comprehensive range of programs and services for the nearly 180,000 people in Maryland, DC and Virginia who are blind or visually impaired. We are seeking an experience rehabilitation professional who shares our passion for providing services to our clients. Education/Experience Requirements: 1. A degree in Orientation & Mobility or completion of certificate program through an accredited university which meets the ACVREP 13 core domain areas. 2. COMS Certification through ACVREP. 3. NOMC (National Orientation and Mobility Certification) certification is accepted. 4. Dual certification O&M and VRT or O&M and TVI preferred. 5. 1-3 years of experience in the field of blindness. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: 1. Must be familiar with the blindness community and professional resources, as well as standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the vision rehabilitation field. 2. Excellent report writing and computer skills required. 3. Working experience with databases. All case notes and reports are entered in our internal database system. 4. Excellent interpersonal skills with good judgment, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, and ability to handle confidential material. 5. Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) can offer this training but needs an O&M instructor. We want someone very capable and the NOMC means that the instructor is well versed in structured discovery. Based on our advocacy, the CLB has agreed to include NOMC Certification as an option for the O&M instructor they are hiring.
