The successful applicant will have either earned the designation of National Orientation and Mobility Certificant (NOMC) within the NBPCB and/or hold certification in Orientation and Mobility from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). * Must have demonstrated knowledge of the Structured Discovery philosophy and means by which Orientation and Mobility is integrated as a core programmatic component. * Must demonstrate competency in BRAILLE by scoring 80% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twelve (12) months of employment. * Must illustrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff; consumers and their families; program graduates; peer Orientation and Mobility Specialists; advisory groups; and agencies such as the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services along with contemporary Structured Discovery Programs. * Demonstrated maturity, self-motivation, and the ability to exercise sound judgment. * Must illustrate outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. * Must either possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low vision or deafblind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss. * Required extensive vicinity and occasional overnight travel. * The successful applicant must submit to a criminal history background information check including, but not limited to FBI and ABI record repositories. Upon offer of employment, the applicant must present a non-refundable fee of $46.90 and appear for scheduled finger printing appointment. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct Orientation and Mobility assessments, focusing on the Structured Discovery student's long/short-term needs grounded in nonvisual instruction; cognitive problem solving; and concerted strategies for clarifying attitudes and raising expectations surrounding blindness. * Based on said assessment and continued evaluation, provide individualized Orientation and Mobility instruction and consultation for Structured Discovery Program participants. * Prepare lesson plans inclusive of sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs; Individualized Employment Plan and/or Personal Futures Plan; functioning and motivational levels. * Prepare and use equipment and materials for the development of Orientation and Mobility skills, following the Structured Discovery curricula and philosophy. * Document Structured Discovery participant progress daily. * Instruct Structured Discovery students in the development of skills and knowledge which will enable them to travel independently to the highest degree possible based on assessed needs and the participants? evaluation, Individualized Employment Plan and/or Personal Futures Plan. * Assist Structured Discovery participants in travelling to various community locations as necessary to provide meaningful instruction in realistic learning environments until participants achieve the skills to arrange for their own transportation. * Present in-service training to AIDB Birmingham Regional Center and Structured Discovery staff on appropriate Orientation and Mobility techniques as needed. * Participate in the Structured Discovery Strategic Planning process to provide a continuum of services aligning with AIDB?s efforts to design innovative instructional programs to meet the unique and changing education and rehabilitation needs of students, consumers and families. * Actively seek ways to educate through effective marketing and positive public relations to enhance and expand the Structured Discovery Program. * Participate in state and national meetings, workshops, presentations, conferences and consumer groups, sharing information learned and best practice methodology to internal/external audiences. * Observe the Code of Ethics of the Orientation and Mobility profession. * Keep abreast of current research and Orientation and Mobility teaching strategies. * Review and update the Structured Discovery Orientation and Mobility curriculum as necessary. * Protect confidentiality of student information while maintaining required records and reports inclusive of data entry into the Gentry Referral Information Net (GRIN). * Demonstrate professionalism in behavior and dress that serves as a role model, setting a good example for Structured Discovery participants and aligning with the AIDB culture. * Attend departmental, inner-agency and campus-wide faculty/committee meetings as assigned. * Perform other duties as assigned. Empowerment Through Integration (ETI) is a 501(c)3 certified non-profit that is changing the narrative surrounding disability both for blind and sighted youth. We create integrated, supportive spaces with life skills training, emotional support, and community service opportunities.?Through these integrated spaces, they are able to break down internal and external barriers surrounding views on ability in order to create positive change in society.?Our?ultimate goal is to enable society to understand that inclusion of all is a value for all. ETI is currently seeking for one volunteer to act as our Life Skills Program Coordinator who will be responsible for the design, organization and implementation of our Life Skills Program in the summer 2018 in Lebanon. Life Skills Program Coordinators will be required to travel to Lebanon to train our team of eager, hard-working ETI volunteers on the ground as well as implement our Life Skills program in Beirut, Lebanon. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES * Contribute to Empowerment Programs: Volunteer Training and Life Skills Programs * Lead the training of Life Skills Coordinators and volunteers in Lebanon (on-site) for the implementation of Life Skills Program and Parent Workshop * Collaborate with Life Skills Program?s team members with localizing and tailoring the curriculum according to each socio-cultural context * Oversee and implement Life Skills training sessions for visually impaired youth in Lebanon (including Syrian and Palestinian refugees) * Assist Research & Evaluation team for the evaluation of Life Skills Programs as needed * Participate on ETI's team meetings (phone calls, Skype, etc) * Check email account on a daily basis and respond to emails in a timely manner * Report to ETI Lebanon Country Director POSITION REQUIREMENTS The Life Skills Program Coordinator will need to be comfortable working as part of a team, be available for travel to Beirut, Lebanon to support our summer programs during 3 weeks in the summer of 2018 (between July 9th and July 27th) and participate in various projects related to training and advocacy about social issues related to blindness in different contexts. Good Morning, Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services- Visual Services currently has two Rehabilitation Teacher Position openings, both position will be located in Tulsa, OK I have included the job description below. Essential Functions: Position will provide counseling and individualized instruction to persons who are blind or visually impaired in facilitating solutions to the challenges of being able to live independently in the everyday environment and in dealing with problems created by their blindness, promoting confidence and self-esteem of the individual customer. A key duty will be raising the awareness of the clients to the opportunities and options which mastery of alternative blindness skills such as Braille, assistive technology, home management skills, etc. The Rehabilitation Teacher is required to be able to read, write and teach Braille I, utilizing a slate and stylus, as well as braillewriters. The Rehabilitation Teacher must be proficient in the use of and instruction of basic technology to include iOS operations for iPhone, iPad, iPod and android phones and apps, and also basic computer skills and keyboarding. The Rehabilitation Teacher provides assessment and instruction to blind and visually impaired consumers pertinent to their functional abilities as they relate to home, work, school and social activities. The person in this position will also consult with other rehabilitation professionals through the vocational rehabilitation process to ensure high quality career and independent living outcomes for their customers. The person in this position must have a good working knowledge of specialized residential training centers in order to provide accurate information so their customers are able to make informed choices and decisions. Applicant must be willing to perform all job related travel. Preference may be given to applicants currently holding Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT) or Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through the Academy for Certification Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or the National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC), or the National Certification in Literary Braille or Unified English Braille (NCLB or NCUEB) from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board. Probationary period (or trial period if applicable) is required. Background Check: The Department of Rehabilitation Services will conduct a criminal background check on new hires as part of an offer of employment that is made contingent upon a successful criminal background check. Education and Experience Requirements: Level I - requirements at this level consist of a Bachelor's degree in orientation and mobility, rehabilitation teaching or a bachelor's degree and one year of experience in a disability related field. Level II - requirements at this level consist of those indicated in Level I plus two years of experience in rehabilitation teaching or orientation and mobility. All applicants at this level must be eligible to sit for certification for either Vision Rehabilitation Therapist or Orientation and Mobility Specialist through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or the National Orientation and Mobility Certificate, (NOMC) from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board. Level III - requirements at this level consist of those indicated in Level II.
