Date & Location This conference will be hosted live via the Zoom conference platform through the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute When: Tuesday, December 15 - Thursday, December 17 Time: 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Call for Presentations We invite you to submit a proposal to present at this conference during one of the concurrent breakout sessions scheduled on the afternoon of December 15, 16, and 17. Abstracts should be submitted on one of the following conference themes or another closely related track: . Structured Discovery methods and principles across the lifespan. . Agency-wide philosophy and culture on blindness. . Educational technologies, policies, and practices for teachers of blind students. . Just a quick note regarding our conference call this past Tuesday

Hello Everyone, I just want to say thanks to everyone that joined us for the conference call Tuesday evening. I also wanted to update all of you regarding one of the things being discussed during the call. This is in regard to working in person with students. At the time of the Call, the Nebraska Center for the Blind was providing in person instruction, while carefully following the CDC recommendations; however, this has changed as of this week. On Wednesday afternoon I dropped by our supervisor, Greg DeWall's office, and in the course of our discussions, he said that he was seriously considering a return to remote instruction. This decision was finalized Thursday, and so until the rates of infection are again falling, we will likely continue to work with our students using phone calls, ?Zoom, and other means. There will be some limited contact at our student apartments, and students will be given some independent routes, but they will not be utilizing public transportation during this period. I wanted you to know of this decision, since some of you were looking for ideas for returning to direct teaching, and while it may be possible to return to this more extensive contact with students, given the current rates of infection, this is probably not the time. Duties and responsibilities to include the following: * Provide Workplace Readiness, Self-Advocacy and Disability-Related skills training to blind youth in comprehensive residential training programs such as the Young Adult Transition Program and LEAP Program. * Work with students on increasing their independent living skills in areas such as developing and managing their morning and evening routines, managing personal hygiene, maintaining clean and organized living spaces, completing laundry and other common household tasks, shopping for groceries and other needed items and planning and preparing their own meals. * Support student learning through providing supplemental braille, technology, cane travel and money management instruction, in particular by working with students to utilize these skills in their daily lives outside the classroom. * Facilitate students' development of age-appropriate social skills through recreational activities on and off campus. Assist students in traveling to and participating in activities in the community. Reinforce proper cane technique and other nonvisual skills during these activities. * Serve as a role model for students in the use of nonvisual techniques and problem-solving skills. * Monitor student behavior and the students' living areas. Provide appropriate supervision to ensure student safety. * Document student progress through monthly and end of program reports. Collaborate with program staff and supervisor to address student needs and concerns. * Promote a positive philosophy of blindness through involvement in trainings and community outreach events for parents, educators and other service providers as directed. Cane Travel Instructor Job Posting For 30 years, Blindness: Learning In New Dimensions (BLIND, Inc.) has provided small group instruction in the alternative techniques of blindness. Our programs are based on a positive attitude toward blindness and a belief in the normality and competency of blind people. We know that with proper training and opportunity, blind people can live full, happy, and successful lives. We work hard to create an environment that promotes active learning and collegiality where adult students can empower themselves and exceed their expectations. We are one of three training centers rooted in the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind, and are located just blocks south of downtown Minneapolis. Successful applicants will be skilled in teaching and versed in the skills of cane travel, sometimes referred to as orientation and mobility, and should believe in the capabilities of blind people. Successful applicants should be passionate about teaching, excited by new challenges, and interested in working as part of a small but energetic team. Instructors undergo staff training in order to ensure that they are fully competent to teach in their subject areas, understand the experiences of students in training, and build a solid foundation in the beliefs of blind people. Therefore, we are willing to work with sighted applicants who have a solid background in specific areas, and are willing to learn and practice nonvisual skills using a blindfold. Please read on to see what fields are preferred. Both staff and student instruction are performed non-visually, with students who have any degree of remaining sight wearing blindfolds (sleepshades). Provide individualized instruction in nonvisual alternative techniques to blind adults in all areas of cane travel using the Structured Discovery approach, including but not limited to: list of 6 items nesting level 1 . Basic cane travel techniques indoors and outdoors, . Analyzing and crossing streets, . Mental mapping and route planning, . Use of GPS and Smartphone applications, . Use of other mobility devices such as support canes and wheelchairs and . Travel in all weather conditions, list end nesting level 1 2. Develop individualized lesson plans while working within the curriculum, and update it as needed. 3. Maintain daily attendance records and write comprehensive monthly reports on each student describing progress made and goals for the next month. 4. Participate and assist in all center confidence building activities, including white water rafting, dogsledding, camping and other challenge recreation activities. Some activities are off-site and require overnight travel. 5. Promote the organization's progressive philosophy of blindness and positive attitudes to students, co-workers and others, and provide support and guidance to students throughout their program. 6.
