Call for Proposals We would like to invite you to submit a proposal to present during one of our concurrent 50-minute breakout sessions which will be scheduled on the afternoon of November 11, 12, and 13. Abstracts should be submitted on one of the following conference themes or another closely related track: list of 10 items . Structured Discovery methods and principles across the lifespan. . Successful integration of alternative blindness skills in the classroom . Braille Instruction for students who are blind or low vision . Educational technologies, policies, and practices for teachers of blind students. . Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) strategies and programs. . Strategies for successful transition from education to rehabilitation. . Teaching Structured Discovery methods and techniques in core subject areas (Cane Travel, Braille, etc.). . Rehabilitation methods, principles, and policies that effect instructors and administrators. . Successful strategies for competitive integrated employment . Classification: Non-Exempt/Full-time, 40 hours per week Reports To: Director of Programs Mission: The mission of Society for the Blind is to empower individuals living with low vision or blindness to discover, develop and achieve their full potential. Job Summary: The essential function of the job is to teach students how to travel safely, efficiently, and independently in their homes, workplaces, community, and beyond using non-visual techniques and tools. Duties: Instruction: 1. Instruct students in the proper use of the long white cane and other mobility tools to travel safely, efficiently, and independently. 2. Train students in the use of non-visual techniques, strategies, and tools for orientation and mobility. 3. Using the Structure Discovery Method, provide real-world opportunities to learn, practice, and reinforce non-visual skills and techniques for safe, efficient, and independent travel. 4. Instruct students in how to safely locate, detect and negotiate stairways. 5. Conduct training in non-visual techniques for safely crossing both controlled and uncontrolled intersections including strategies for negotiating high traffic roadways. 6. Teach students how to safely and effectively utilize public transportation, including: route and trip planning; locating transit stops and transportation hubs; and boarding/exiting buses, trains, airplanes, and other vehicles. 7. Instruct students in how to safely and effectively negotiate escalators, elevators, revolving doors, and other challenges encountered when traveling. 8. Teach students how to locate and navigate safely and efficiently public facilities such as businesses, shopping malls, stadiums, airports, hospitals, college campuses, etc. 9. Instruct students in the use of iPhone location features and mobility apps. 10. Create tactile and auditory maps and instruct students in their proper use. 11. Evaluate students' functional, physical and mental capabilities as related to orientation and mobility. 12. Determine student needs for any necessary special adaptations and make recommendations accordingly. 13. Stay current in best practices for teaching O&M. 14. Assist with instruction of Assistive Technology, Independent Living Skills, and Braille as needed. Documentation 1. Maintain accurate, thorough, and timely ongoing recordkeeping of client services, including, but not limited to case notes, lesson notes, and progress reports. 2. Complete time sheets, time off requests, and other employee documentation accurately, thoroughly, and on time. 3. Document immediately and thoroughly any student falls or other accidents that occur during training. Team Building and Communication 1. Report student issues to supervisor and contribute to ongoing problem solving of such issues while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. 2. Communicate with Department of Rehabilitation counselors, family members and other appropriate parties regarding student progress and other issues. 3. Participate in individual case conferences and confer regularly with program staff concerning client's progress and adjustment to blindness issues. 4. Maintain positive and professional relations with counselors of Department of Rehabilitation and other agencies as well as Society students, staff, and volunteers. Other Duties: 1. Attend all staff and department meetings. 2. Adhere to all Society policies and procedures. 3. Obtain continuing education to maintain and update knowledge and skills. 4. Perform other duties as required. Qualifications: 1. Master's Degree in Blindness Rehabilitation or related field. 2. NOMC, COMS, or other O&M certification. 3. Two years work experience in blindness rehabilitation or related field. 4. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 5. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, & internet.
