Position Announcement: Director, Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired LOCATION: Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired - Baton Rouge, Louisiana The Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director of the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI). LSVI is located on a 122 acre campus in Baton Rouge, LA, adjacent to the Louisiana State University (LSU) main campus, and shares the campus with the Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD). The School is part of the Louisiana Special Schools District which is governed by the Superintendent, Special School District. The Director, LSVI reports to the Superintendent, Louisiana Special Schools (LSS). LSVI currently has an enrollment of approximately 69 students. These include academically oriented students, students with vocational and career preferences, and students with significant disabilities in addition to their vision loss. Approximately half of the students live at the School in a residential setting during the week. The campus is equipped with extensive and up-to-date education technology. LSVI is also responsible for providing resources and technical assistance statewide. The LSVI staff consists of 84 dedicated full and part-time employees. Administrative and support services such as security, maintenance, fiscal management and dining services are supervised by the Superintendent, LSS thus allowing the LSVI Director to focus on educational leadership. The function of LSVI is to educate blind/visually impaired students. The total environment of the school, including both classroom activities and the extended day programs, facilitates accomplishment of the goals of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each child. LSVI offers a broad spectrum of educational services from college-bound programs to daily living skills and socialization training and activities. LSVI is seeking a leader who can build upon this strong foundation and maintain a positive school climate and culture. LSVI, the Special School District, and the school community are all seeking an experienced educator of visually impaired children with a strong commitment to the school, its future and the advancement of the education of visually impaired children throughout the state. Furthermore, the school community is seeking someone who communicates clearly with all stakeholders and stakeholder groups and a leader who personally and professionally values the involvement of the Blind Community in the life of the school and recognizes the value of Braille as a critical aspect of the education of visually impaired students. The 2017 Blind Educator of the Year Award A number of years ago the Blind Educator of the Year Award was established by the National Organization of Blind Educators (the educators division of the National Federation of the Blind) to pay tribute to a blind teacher whose exceptional classroom performance, notable community service, and uncommon commitment to the NFB merit national recognition. Beginning with the 1991 presentation, this award became an honor bestowed by our entire movement. The change reflects our recognition of the importance of good teaching and the impact an outstanding blind teacher has on students, faculty, community, and all blind Americans. This award is presented in the spirit of the outstanding educators who founded and have continued to nurture the National Federation of the Blind and who, by example, have imparted knowledge of our strengths to us and raised our expectations. We have learned from Dr. Jacobus tenBroek, Dr. Kenneth Jernigan, and Immediate Past President Marc Maurer that a teacher not only provides a student with information but also provides guidance, advocacy, and love. The recipient of the Blind Educator of the Year Award must exhibit all of these traits and must advance the cause of blind people in the spirit and philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind. The Blind Educator of the Year Award is presented at the annual convention of the National Federation of the Blind. Honorees must be present to receive an appropriately inscribed plaque and a check for $1,000.
