I hope you all don't mind me sharing this here. After a day of teaching a
student with low vision, who has been discouraged over and over again about
using non-visual techniques, I couldn't hold back on writing a post I've
been wanting to write for some time now. I would love your feedback on this

JOB DUTIES:
This position assesses the need for and provide individual and group instruction in computer technology skills as part of a professional team in a day rehabilitation center setting, to assist and support the Counseling Section in preparing individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind for employment or independent living.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Basic Education Requirement:
Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree.
Excess work experience as described under General or Specialized Experience, below, or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience which provided knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.
The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systemically.
Experience Requirements:
General Experience: One year of progressively responsible professional work providing direct services to individuals with disabilities which provided knowledge and understanding of the implications of disabling conditions and the effect of disability on the behavior and personality of individuals.
Substitutions Allowed:
1. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education may be substituted for all of the General Experience.
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university in teaching the blind may be substituted for all of the General Experience and one (1) year of the Specialized Experience.
3. Excess Specialized Experience (as described below) may be substituted for the General Experience on a month-for-month basis.
Specialized Experience: Progressively responsible professional work experience providing rehabilitation instruction to blind or visually impaired individuals in one or more subject areas or topics such as communication, personal management, home management, activities of daily living, recreation or leisure activities, etc.

JOB DUTIES: The primary purpose of this position is to assess the need for and provide individualized orientation and mobility services in the Rehabilitation Center and as part of a professional team, to assist individuals referred by the Counseling Section, in preparing for, securing, retaining or regaining employment or in functioning more independently in the home and community. In addition, the position will assess and provide orientation and mobility services in the community when necessary to meet the varying and changing needs of the adjustment services program. Consultation and technical assistance is also provided to other branches, individuals and organizations that work with persons who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree which included coursework in human anatomy, physiology or human behavior.
Excess work experience as described under the General or Specialized Experience below or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience which provided knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree including the coursework indicated above, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities.
The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents, read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systemically.
Experience Requirement:
Except for the substitutions provided for in this specification, applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described in the statements below, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
General Experience: One year of work experience which involved providing professional health care/social services to individuals with disabilities and provided knowledge and understanding of the cause, origin and implications of disabling conditions and the effect of physical disability on the behavior and personality of individuals.
Specialized Experience: One year of progressively responsible professional work experience which involved the provision of orientation and mobility assessment and training services to blind and visually impaired individuals.
Substitutions Allowed:
1. Applicants who graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, special education, or other related major which included coursework that provided knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and human behavior; and knowledge and understanding of the cause, origin and implications of disabling conditions and the effect of physical disability on the behavior and personality of individuals, will be deemed to have met the Education and Experience requirements for the Orientation and Mobility Therapist II level.
2. Excess Specialized Experience may be substituted for the General Experience on a month for month basis.
3. Applicants who have satisfactorily completed an Orientation and Mobility program approved, or deemed to meet criteria specified by the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, for Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, will be deemed to have met the Education and Experience requirements for the Orientation and Mobility Therapist Ill level.

Individuals who work in the blindness field and who will be attending the
2015 convention of the National Federation of the Blind are encouraged to
join the editorial staff of the Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research
for a workshop on how to write a professional practice article. The workshop
will take place on Monday, July 6, 6:00-8:00 PM, Salon 17, Level 2.
The Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research (JBIR) is seeking the
submission of professional practice articles that capture the knowledge that
many of our members who work in the blindness field possess. This workshop
will provide an overview of how to write a professional practice article,
and then provide attendees an opportunity to work with JBIR editors and
other authors to prepare an outline for a professional practice article on a
topic of your choosing. Attendees should bring something to write with and a
topic for their outline.

The Department for the Blind (IDB) is seeking applicants for the position of
Senior Services Specialist for the Blind 1/Home Management Instructor in the
adult comprehensive Adjustment- to- blindness training center. This person
provides small group instruction in the nonvisual skills of cooking,
cleaning, and daily living /personal management. We are looking for someone
who will participate fully in center activities and challenge students to
grow and reach their fullest potential. Our programs are based on a positive
attitude toward blindness and a belief in the normality and competency of
blind people. We know that with proper training and opportunity, blind
people can live full, happy, and successful lives.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Provide individualized, nonvisual instruction to adults in all areas of home
management including, but not limited to: food shopping and preparation,
sewing, cleaning, labeling, clothing organization and care, personal
management and budgeting.
Produce braille recipes using embossers and software.
Provide instruction to several students in a small group format.
Demonstrate and promote a positive attitude toward blindness amongst center

Thorough knowledge and understanding of the agency's philosophy of blindness
and the ability to implement this philosophy in work duties.
It is the policy of the Department for the Blind to conduct background
checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of employment.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university
with a degree in human service-oriented sciences, education, marketing or
business and experience equal to three years of full time professional work.
