[Noma] seeking creative ideas for teaching compass directions to children

HI, Just a couple of quick thoughts to add? Playing games like Red light green light work well only instead of running to the person who is it, the person who?s it calls out a direction and the players run to that direction?s designated base. Also, playing a game like ?Mother May I? and giving them things to do towards a certain direction is fun. I guess this is a bit like Deja?s suggestion for Simon says though. Also, doing a mirror-image kind of activity is good when demonstrating how directions are more helpful than just left or right. For example, if you are facing the child, you can say something like ?point to the right? then you can show how your way of pointing to the right is different than the child/students. Then, you repeat the exercise and say ?point to the North? and show how you are both now pointing the same way. Letting the students design their own maps of things like the school, neighborhood, etc. are also great ways to teach directions, along with several other travel concepts. The kinesthetic aspect of this activity works really well though in helping to solidify such an abstract concept like cardinal directions sometimes can be. Then have a ball with a bell in it and give them directions (north, east, south, west), and they have to throw the ball to that person in that corner. All four kids have to focus in order to be prepared to catch the ball if it is there corner, so this helps them pay attention the whole time. Then you can give them new positions so they have to re-adjust there thinking. With more advance students you can do norther/east, south/east, etc... Another idea is to have them go on a treasure hunt. Place a prize for them in one spot of the room/yard/court and have them start in a certain corner, then play simon says. For example, Simon says walk three steps North. You do this until they reach the treasure, if they make a mistake on their directions though, they have to start over to get to the treasure. Trouble is, most people have become more accustomed to digital time devices. An idea that crept into mind, however, is perhaps circling chairs around a circle as for Musical chairs and the object might be to identify the chair at each compass point. Hello Everyone, Now that you are busy preparing for this year's national convention, I wanted to remind all of you about the 2016 Cane walk. I hope that each of you will be able to join us for this terrific event, and help share the knowledge and skills that have helped so many young people to gain confidence and independence. Introduce students to and teach them in the use of non-visual methods and strategies for orientation and mobility. 3. Using the Structure Discovery Method, Provide real world opportunities to practice and reinforce non-visual skills and techniques for safe, efficient, and independent travel. 4. Instruct students in how to safely, locate, detect, and negotiate stairways including ascending/descending, fall prevention/recovery, and checking for hazards. 5. Conduct training in non-visual techniques for safely crossing both controlled and uncontrolled intersections including strategies for negotiating high traffic roadways. 6. Teach students how to safely and effectively utilize public transportation, including: route and trip planning; locating transit stops and transportation hubs; and boarding/exiting busses, trains, airplanes and other vehicles. Instruct students in how to safely and effectively negotiate escalators, elevators, revolving doors, and other challenges encountered when traveling. 7. Teach students how to locate, use, and navigate safely and efficiently busy public facilities such as shopping malls, stadiums, airports, hospitals, college campuses, etc. 8. Create tactile and auditory maps and instruct students in their proper use. 9. Evaluate students' functional, physical and mental capabilities, as related to mobility and orientation. 10. Maintain thorough, complete and timely ongoing weekly and monthly record keeping of client services; including, but not limited to case notes, lesson notes, evaluations, progress reports, and correspondence. 2. Documents immediately and thoroughly any student falls or other accidents that occur during training. Team Building and Networking 1. Present client issues to supervisor and contribute to ongoing problem solving of such issues while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. 2. In the process of this transition, myriad stakeholders have been and continue to be engaged in all aspects of producing, procuring, preparing professionals, and teaching children and adults the UEB code. The National Blindness Professional Certification Board is one such organization whose mission it is to develop certification standards to measure proficiency in UEB for teachers of the code. The National Certification in Unified English Braille (NCUEB) was created for that purpose. This manuscript (a) describes the steps that have been taken to test the efficacy of the NCUEB exam, (b) presents data which was generated by 83 individuals who took the exam between January and July 2015 across eleven different testing venues, and (c) provides a statistical report on the internal consistency, generalizability, content validity, and criterion-referencing for this examination. Results suggest that the NCUEB is valid and appropriate for its stated purpose.
