Job Description The Department for the Blind (IDB) is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Services Specialist for the Blind 1/ Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. This position covers a territory of approximately 15 counties in northwest Iowa and requires frequent travel. .Submit necessary reports, case recordings, authorizations, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. .Maintain client files and other records in an organized and specified format. Application and Eligibility Determination .Interview applicant, consult with family, and contact other sources such as ophthalmologists, community partners, and employers to procure visual, medical, psychological, social and educational information. .Determines eligibility for services, assesses vocational, social and medical needs through appropriate testing and medical reports. Plan Development/Counseling and Guidance/Plan Implementation .Provide guidance and counseling regarding client's personal and vocational adjustment throughout the rehabilitation process. .Assist clients through informed choice in determining appropriate vocational goals and serves as a resource for clients seeking information regarding employment and employment goals. .Maintains a working knowledge of assistive technology and reasonable accommodations. Employer Development and related duties: .Assist clients to obtain an employment outcome using a variety of job development and job placement strategies including contacting employers, assessing employers' needs, and providing resources and education to employers and clients. .Counsel and guide clients in the establishment of self-employment goals. Public Awareness and Education .Advocate, consult, advise, educate, mediate, and intercede with service providers, employers, and the general public. .Develop and maintain referral sources by providing information and resources through personal contacts, written communication and presentations. She is trying to get justification for paying for a client to come to the O&M program but needs verification that blind people can actually teach travel. Washington Seminar as Professional Development

Aloha everyone, I have recently partaken in conversations about the legitimacy of attending the Washington Seminar of the National Federation of the Blind as part of the professional development of a mobility instructor holding the NOMC. I am writing to ask a few questions to see how this practice has been justified by others before me. On the NBPCB website, there is a section discussing recertification. It reads: Recertification NBPCB recognizes the need for Certified Blindness Professionals to continue their education and training in order to remain current on innovations and policies in the field. Therefore, individuals must reapply every five years for recertification in order to maintain active NOMC status. The Recertification process is designed to ensure that all certificants maintain their skills and knowledge as cane travel instructors, and to promote continuous education within the profession. Recertification can be met by either retesting or providing documentation of a minimum of 100 Continuing Education credits throughout the five-year certification period. The following activities are examples of opportunities which may be helpful in a crewing continued education credits: o Professional Conferences and Presentations o Contribution to published works in the field of rehabilitation for the blind o Providing professional preparation o Engaging in relevant training o Conducting research in the field of rehabilitation of the blind o Providing community service including rehabilitation of the blind o Governmental Affairs o Professional Ethics (10 points must come from this category) Given that statement, it seems obvious to me that attending Washington Seminar is professional development because it helps us get recertified. I am hearing, though, that it has absolutely nothing to do with the job of a mobility instructor and that there is no way that it can be justified as professional development.
