Below is a link to a brief 10-question survey. The purpose of the survey is for the AER Board of Directors to collect information about the perspectives of its members and all professionals in the field. We invite any professionals serving in the field to complete the survey (AER members and non-members). The questions on the survey will allow us to sort the data to filter between members and non-members while gathering data to understand the full landscape of the field. The data will be reviewed at the January 24th AER Board meeting. Survey results will be shared with the membership. We will use the information to support our members and do everything we can to represent our professions as we continue discussions with ACVREP representatives. Please note: 1. The AER survey will be open until end of day on January 20, 2025. 2. Any professional in the field of blindness and low vision is invited to complete the survey (both AER Members and non-members). 3. Structure Discovery Professionals Educational Trainings As part of the NOMCT Committee's commitment to continuous learning and professional development, the education subcommittee is excited to offer a comprehensive five-part training session, that started in January 2025. This program will cover a range of disabilities, focusing on strategies to enhance individuals' independence and uphold high expectations in working with diverse needs. Our five-part training session will cover a range of disabilities, each with a specific topic presented by experts in the field. All training courses will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month starting in January 2025 from 8PM EST to 9PMEST. Below is a list of the dates, topics, and presenters for each session. An Interesting Study Concerning Alzheimer's Disease

Hello Everyone, I just watched a very interesting video on Youtube from "Sci Show," regarding possible ways to prevent Alzheimer's disease. The video cited a study published in the British Journal of Medicine, which looked at the cause of death among a wide variety of people, and then plucked out those that had died from Alzheimer's. They then looked at the type of work these people had done, and how many had passed from Alzheimer's in each profession. The lowest number of those that died as a result of Alzheimer's was among London Cab Drivers, and the second lowest group were among First Responders, Ambulance Drivers, Firefighters, and the like. They then studied the hippocampuses of righthanded male Cab Drivers. The reason for this is that the hippocampus is where Alzheimer's appears to start. What they discovered is that these Cab Drivers have larger than average hippocampuses. Now, just like a muscle, areas of the brain tend to enlarge with use, and with being challenged, i.e. when having to solve problems. The hippocampus just happens to be the part of the brain that Is responsible for encoding memory, and understanding spatial relationships and geometric concepts. So, the theory is that Cab Drivers and First Responders working in the complex environment of London, having to learn the city and locate addresses, are working their hippocampuses to a greater degree than people in other professions, and this is enlarging and strengthening this part of their brains, which is helping them to avoid the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Now, as they point out in the video, there are many variables that need to be considered, so as per normal, there is a need for more research to strengthen the conclusions being drawn. For example, is there a possibility that people with larger hippocampuses are more likely to become Taxi Drivers and First Responders? The study also doesn't look at other professions that fell below the mean, or how those that drive cabs, or race around in emergency equipment and fight fires may not live as long as others, and therefore are not living long enough to develop Alzheimer's. Now, can any of you think of a group of professionals that may also be enlarging and strengthening their hippocampuses? The possibility that those of us in the O&M profession, as well as the students we instruct, could be receiving an additional benefit from our work is a fascinating thought. Hi guys, I am trying to find Mary Noel‘s textbooks. I knew she published at least one and can’t remember the title. I’m looking on Audible. I checked bard but had nothing into her last name and thought maybe a title search on audible would get me better results. I have been asked to do a presentation to supported employment Coaches and other workers this spring. They don’t know anything about blindness so I will have to come at it from a perspective they’re not used to thinking about. Of course I plan to use my Joe cutter, but I thought having Mary Noelle stuff would help since I’ve already done one presentation on using childhood orientation and mobility tactics to assist adults with cognitive Disabilities.
