NBPCB Recertification Process

Hello, Several of you who currently hold SD certification with NBPCB have requested information regarding the recertification process even though your expiration dates are in either 2024 or 2025. We are passing along the information that folks whose certification is up this year received earlier this month. We cannot guarantee that there will not be any minor changes in the future, but you may find this information, along with the attached documents, to be helpful. National Blindness Professional Certification Board Application for Recertification Structured Discovery Professionals The National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB) requires that all Structured Discovery Professionals who are certified through the NBPCB recertify in order to demonstrate continued knowledge and education in the area of Structured Discovery. (Individuals holding NCUEB certification are not eligible for continuing education recertification and instead must retest each five years.) For those holding Structured Discovery Professional certification, recertification must occur as scheduled after the certification date listed on your most recent certificate. Recertification can be achieved by means of earning 100 continuing education points (CEP) during the 5-year certification period. Points may be accrued across nine areas of professional education. At least ten (10) points must come from the area of professional ethics and not more than 50 points may be counted in any one category. Our recertification process is as follows: 1. Read the full Code of Conduct and grievance process, which is located on the main NBPCB web page. Failure to understand the code does not invalidate your obligation to abide by it. When you register for your recertification you will be prompted to check off and sign your agreement to this code and that signed form will be maintained in your folder. 2. Register for recertification online using the provided link prior to the expiration date printed on your certificate. Completing your application past the printed expiration date may result in delays and penalties. 3. Submit the appropriate recertification fee, which can be done online with a credit card or by check. 4. Submit the Continuing Education Points (CEP) tracking form and all supporting documents electronically to the NBPCB office at admin at nbpcb.org . Attached is a list of 9 categories of continuing education and their associated point values and a Continuing Education Tracking Form which is an Excel spreadsheet for helping you track your points. (If you need this document in another format you may contact the NBPCB Office.) We encourage you to begin tracking your points as you accumulate them but the NBPCB will only process your points at the time you register for recertification. Claims for certain CE points require verification and documentation (such as employment, conference attendance, or professional discourse) must be submitted electronically in Word, RTF, or PDF formats. Please note: employment verification is not required if you work at a NBPCB certified training center. The Continuing Education Tracking form and all supporting documentation should be submitted electronically to the NBPCB office at admin at nbpcb.org <mailto:admin at nbpcb.org> . These may be sent as separate attachments, enclosed within a zip file, or may be submitted as a link to a cloud storage folder where the office can retrieve them. You should receive confirmation by the office at least five (5) working days after your submission. Contact the office if you have not received verification. Please contact our office if you need any of these recertification documents emailed to you at any time. Also, please note that as of June 1, 2021, all persons seeking initial Structured Discovery Professional certification or recertification will undergo a criminal background check. Nonvisually Making Espresso

Hi everyone, First off, this isn't a normal cane travel question, but it is a blind rehab question. I've tried this question on Facebook and was disappointed that I couldn't find an answer there. I want to ask about something that I think needs to be more broadly understood in our network. We teach students how to go to Starbucks in cane travel. We teach them how to make coffee in home management, but not espresso, as far as I know. I also just want to know about this personally. As our society has evolved, consuming espresso has become very normalized. I have been trying to learn a way to make espresso nonvisually. We teach students how to make coffee, but why not espresso? I have found that espresso machines can be sorted into two major categories: Manual and automatic. Manual espresso machines typically require a person to turn a knob on and off while the espresso is brewing, and all the manual espresso machines I've encountered have required that a person look at a light that blinks to indicate when it's time to turn off the machine. A few baristas (coffee shop employees) have told me that they've heard of espresso machines that chime to communicate this same information, but then the customer service lines at major espresso machine companies seem to say that their products do not include this feature. Automatic espresso machines, like a Nestle Nespresso machine, basically do all the work for you once you push the right buttons to tell them to go. Nespresso machines require a person to buy the Nespresso-specific pods, which can be limiting. Other automatic espresso machines ask you to pour in milk, etc., and then they make entire drinks for you, often after entering prompts on a touch screen. So far, I cannot find any blind people who make their own espresso. Are people using manual machines and just anticipating the timing, or have we figured out a way to get other nonvisual feedback on when the shot is done? Also, should we consider teaching this in training because of how common it has become to make and consume espresso? Surely, we don't have to teach every single skill in training; a training center graduate with this interest should be able to come ask this question like I am asking it here. It struck me that this is a skill that seems to be much more common among sighted people than blind people, and I'd love to close the gap. National Blindness Professional Certification Board Code of Conduct Annual Notice to Stakeholders The National Blindness Professional Certification Board's (NBPCB) CODE OF CONDUCT is a public statement of the common set of values and principles used to promote and maintain high standards of behavior among those specialists in work with the blind who elect and are accepted to become Structured Discovery (SD) Professionals or those training facilities that are certified through this Board's certification processes. The Board is committed to furthering the ability of persons who are blind to function competently, independently, and successfully--not only in their own environments--but also as fully integrated and participating citizens in the broader society. To this end, all SD PROFESSIONALS and certified facilities shall treat persons who are blind with dignity, respect, and provide the best possible training and related vocational rehabilitation services which can be offered based upon the most current techniques and training principles available at the time. This notice to stakeholders is being sent out annually to ensure that responsible parties are aware of the NBPCB code of Conduct and the procedures that have been put in place to protect consumers.
