Hello Everyone, I just want to say thanks to everyone that joined us for the conference call Tuesday evening. I also wanted to update all of you regarding one of the things being discussed during the call. This is in regard to working in person with students. At the time of the Call, the Nebraska Center for the Blind was providing in person instruction, while carefully following the CDC recommendations; however, this has changed as of this week. On Wednesday afternoon I dropped by our supervisor, Greg DeWall's office, and in the course of our discussions, he said that he was seriously considering a return to remote instruction. This decision was finalized Thursday, and so until the rates of infection are again falling, we will likely continue to work with our students using phone calls, ?Zoom, and other means. There will be some limited contact at our student apartments, and students will be given some independent routes, but they will not be utilizing public transportation during this period. I wanted you to know of this decision, since some of you were looking for ideas for returning to direct teaching, and while it may be possible to return to this more extensive contact with students, given the current rates of infection, this is probably not the time. Please be safe, and if there is a change in your agency's policies, please share this information with all of us. Sincerely, Jeff

Cane Travel Instructor Job Posting For 30 years, Blindness: Learning In New Dimensions (BLIND, Inc.) has provided small group instruction in the alternative techniques of blindness. Our programs are based on a positive attitude toward blindness and a belief in the normality and competency of blind people. We know that with proper training and opportunity, blind people can live full, happy, and successful lives. We work hard to create an environment that promotes active learning and collegiality where adult students can empower themselves and exceed their expectations. We are one of three training centers rooted in the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind, and are located just blocks south of downtown Minneapolis. Successful applicants will be skilled in teaching and versed in the skills of cane travel, sometimes referred to as orientation and mobility, and should believe in the capabilities of blind people. Successful applicants should be passionate about teaching, excited by new challenges, and interested in working as part of a small but energetic team. Instructors undergo staff training in order to ensure that they are fully competent to teach in their subject areas, understand the experiences of students in training, and build a solid foundation in the beliefs of blind people. Therefore, we are willing to work with sighted applicants who have a solid background in specific areas, and are willing to learn and practice nonvisual skills using a blindfold. Please read on to see what fields are preferred. Both staff and student instruction are performed non-visually, with students who have any degree of remaining sight wearing blindfolds (sleepshades). Provide individualized instruction in nonvisual alternative techniques to blind adults in all areas of cane travel using the Structured Discovery approach, including but not limited to: list of 6 items nesting level 1 . Ceramic Cane Tips

Hi everyone, I remember seeing, at a convention a few years ago, some ceramic versions of the metal cane tips that we so often use. They might have been made by Chris Park, but I'm not sure. I haven't seen them since then, but I'd like to be somewhat knowledgeable about them. Does anyone here know why we haven't adopted those tips? Are they too heavy? Do they scratch floors? Do they crack? DARE TO BE REMARKABLE: Pathways Towards Structured Discovery - Call for Presentations DARE TO BE REMARKABLE is a three-day national training conference for education and rehabilitation professionals who work with blind transition-aged students or adults. Date & Location This conference will be hosted live via the Zoom conference platform through the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute When: Tuesday, December 15 - Thursday, December 17 Time: 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Call for Presentations We invite you to submit a proposal to present at this conference during one of the concurrent breakout sessions scheduled on the afternoon of December 15, 16, and 17. Abstracts should be submitted on one of the following conference themes or another closely related track: . Structured Discovery methods and principles across the lifespan. . Agency-wide philosophy and culture on blindness. . Educational technologies, policies, and practices for teachers of blind students. . Rehabilitation methods, principles, and policies that effect instructors and administrators. . Teaching Structured Discovery methods and techniques in core subject areas (Cane Travel, Braille, etc.). . Successful transition from education to rehabilitation. . Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) strategies and programs. Proposals should include: . Title of Presentation . Name and contact information for lead presenter . Name and contact information of additional presenters (If any). . Indicate whether you are willing to repeat the presentation. . AV requirements (note: you may be required to provide your own equipment) . Abstract that includes a description of the workshop and what participants will learn. Proposals should not exceed 200 words in length. Save the Date National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute DARE TO BE REMARKABLE: Pathways toward Structured Discovery A three-day national training conference for education and rehabilitation professionals who work with blind transition-age students and adults When: Tuesday, December 15 - Thursday, December 17 Time: 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time Where: Live via Zoom * Please see the attached call for presenters This conference is for all rehabilitation and education professionals who work with the population of transition-age youth and adults who are blind or low vision. Specific tracks will also be offered for adult VR consumers who are currently participating in rehabilitation training programs. This conference will include: * Keynote presentations each day by leaders in the rehabilitation and education fields. * Workgroups on Structured Discovery Training methods and principles. * Professional think tank work group sessions for VR instructors and administrators * Consumer panels on what works * Seminar style discussion groups for consumers who are receiving residential rehabilitation services.
