NFB convention cane travel volunteer opportunity + CEU's

Hello all, Forwarding on behalf of Anil Lewis. Note that one of the times precede the NBPCB Rehab Conference. However, this activity does qualify for CEU's under category 5. All: WE have eleven students attending the national convention as part of the NFB Career Quest, and we would like them to have the opportunity to be exposed to some structured discovery travel instruction. As they are staying in the Rosen Plaza, it would be ideal if the experience included traveling to and or from the Rosen Center. WE are interested in knowing if anyone is open to working with students that arrive on July 2, or available to work on travel from the Rosen Plaza at 7:00 a.m. on July 3. Otherwise, let us know when you are available and we will attempt to schedule time with one of the students. We apologize for the last minute request, but would appreciate anyone who would be willing to assist. NFB Free White Cane Application Form: Sizing Instructions

Hi everyone, There is something on the NFB Free White Cane program request form that I find a bit off, so I am writing to folks here to ask if this is what the rest of you are doing. The Free White Cane program application form can be found here: https://freecane.nfb.org/ In the application it reads: Cane Sizing For starter canes: measure to your armpit. Seasoned travelers: measure to your chin or higher. ## If the only cane a person has is one of these heights, and it is not reasonably easy to get a longer one, I am not opposed to working with them, but I personally aim for a cane to reach to some part of their nose. This is achievable for basically everyone because a typical adult nose is at least 2 inches long so that some cane will match this spot. If this strikes a lot of people as odd, do you think we should try to get the instructions on the form amended? Details: This presentation will discuss Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) curriculum which focuses on the foundational techniques necessary to develop future independence for students who are blind or visually impaired. This presentation will explore activities in Dr. Chamberlain?s books The ABCs of Structured Discovery Cane Travel for Children, and Structured Discovery Cane Travel Approach to Orientation and Mobility Concepts. Participants will learn of some tried-and-true skill-building fundamental transformational mobility techniques/activities essential to developing problem-solving mobility independence within natural environments. These activity-based ideas may be used to enhance introduction to and/or assistance with on-going education of comprehending complicated concrete and abstract Orientation and Mobility concepts to help achieve independent mobility.
