The goal of the Department of Services for the Blind (DSB) is to assist in the stable employment of Blind, Deaf Blind and Low Vision clients. The purpose of the Orientation and Training Center (OTC) Administrator is to manage the programs and participant activity performed by the agency with residential and commuting students located in the Orientation and Training Center (OTC) in the Seattle area. The position is a leadership role that is responsible for a multi-disciplinary team along with managing a budget of over $1 million dollars. The funds provide a number of services that include assessments, adjustment to blindness, self-advocacy, adaptive skills of living, and vocational training services that serve 60-100 Washington State residents who are blind, low vision, or deaf blind. The ability to provide these services fulfills the agency's mission of "Inclusion, Independence, and Economic Vitality for individuals with visual disabilities. Qualifications Required: Bachelor's Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation, Counseling, Public or Business Administration, Adult Education, or related field required; OR Six (6) years' experience in public administration and/or developing and managing adult educational training programs AND Expert knowledge of current rehabilitation teaching practices Special Requirement: * Must pass Criminal Justice Records Check Preferred/Desired: * Masters' Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Teaching, Public or Business Administration, Adult Education, or a related field * Work experience with a range of people with disabilities * Experience in: * Job readiness/vocational training * Adaptive technologies of blindness and low vision * Work within a public Vocational Rehabilitation program * English as a Second Language (ESL) training * Managing distance learning programs * Curriculum development and course scheduling * Supervisory experience Supplemental Information Please attach the following documents, failure to do so may result in not being considered for the position: * A letter of interest that shows your personality and voice to describe why you are the successful candidate and how you meet the specific qualifications for this position; * Current resume, detailing experience, and education; and * A list of at least three (3) professional references with current telephone numbers. Rolling ball tips

Good morning all. I have heard that the rolling ball cane tips on a straight cane, are better for deaf blind clients as they give more feedback. I have never worked with this or seen this before. Has anyone out there tried it? Is there any logic to this? A client tells me that this is what the Hellen Keller Center is promoting out there. Question about IEP Goals

Aloha Colleagues, I write to ask for you all to give me a little feedback on an IEP goal that I see for a student who is about 5 years old. It seems odd to me. One of the O&M goals says: When given a tactile map, Jane Doe will use the map to complete 10 campus route with 90% accuracy 3 of 4 opportunities. The 90 percent accuracy thing rubs me the wrong way, but I'm particularly unsure about whether someone should be training a young child to try to read a tactile map and implement it when this student is still working on basic cane technique. I don't really ever teach people to use tactile maps, especially not to give them a map and expect them to follow it like it's one of the treasure maps that my friends and I used to make for each other at recess when I was that age.
