National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB) Memorial Scholarships Arlene Hill Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is intended for individuals who are seeking certification to teach Structured Discovery cane travel through the NBPCB apprenticeship program at an approved training center. This scholarship will be awarded to a person who exemplifies the traits of Arlene Hill-namely a deep-seated passion for teaching the skills of cane travel to blind people. This scholarship is intended for individuals who are pursuing the apprenticeship route-therefore, no college degree is required. The amount and frequency of the scholarship will be determined by the NBPCB board annually, and only at such times as a worthy candidate is identified. Limited Time Opportunity for Careers in Rehabilitation of the Blind Scholarships are now available! Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness Louisiana Tech University Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) and Structured Discovery Rehabilitation have been demonstrated to be among the most innovative and effective forms of rehabilitation training for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Louisiana Tech University has operated its Orientation and Mobility program on this model successfully for 18 years, with upwards of 90% successful employment and employer satisfaction rates. Louisiana Tech is excited to announce that along with its O&M program, it has expanded its training and has also launched a brand-new concentration in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind. Scholarships remain available, but are only guaranteed for one more year, for qualified individuals seeking one of the following degree paths: * Master of Arts in Counseling/Guidance with Concentration in Orientation and Mobility. * Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance with Concentration in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind Why me? * The field of educating and rehabilitating children and adults who are blind is deeply rewarding and life-changing. * The job market is wide open; currently, we receive four times the number of employer requests than we have graduates to provide. * Training occurs on campus in Ruston, Louisiana, and can be completed in as little as one year. * No prior background or experience in blindness is necessary-we'll teach you everything you need to know. * Scholarships are provided on a competitive basis to qualified persons and can cover costs for attending the university. * Scholarships also support travel to conferences, trainings, and field-based experiences at Structured Discovery training programs. 2018 Cane Walk

Hello Everyone, Here is your reminder regarding the upcoming 2018 Cane Walk. The details are still being worked out, and so the information provided here may be subject to change. I wanted to make sure that you were aware that the Cane Walk is being planned, and your participation would be truly appreciated. Should there be any changes regarding the date, times, or location of the event as stated here, I will provide you with as early of a notice as possible. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at convention once again this year, and I hope that you will be able to join us for the Cane Walk once again. This year, we expect that the Cane Walks will be held on Wednesday, July 4th. The times should be the same as always-the first session from 8:45-10:30 and the second session from 11:00-12:45. As in previous years, the Cane Walk will likely be held in Wekiwa 8. Thank you again to everyone that has volunteered to be a part of this year's Cane Walk, and remember that instructors are always welcome to join us, if you would like to be a part of this terrific opportunity to share our skills and knowledge with the future generation of Federationists. Iowa Department for the Blind JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Summer Youth Counselor POSTING DATE: April 2, 2018 Closing Date: April 16, 2018 LOCATION: Des Moines, Iowa PART TIME/FULL TIME STATUS: up to 4 Temporary/Full-Time Positions SALARY: $16.20/hr. Expected total salary to be approximately $7,500. JOB DESCRIPTION: Temporary Summer Youth Counselors will support the mission, vision and values of the Iowa Department for the Blind. Counselors will mentor youth ages 14-21 during IDB?s two month residential summer program. Roles will be assigned based on staff skills and interests, but will include assisting to teach alternative techniques of blindness through classes such as braille, cane travel, assistive technology, home and personal management and woodshop, or teaching alternative techniques of blindness through assisting students in their apartments and during evening and weekend activities. Examples of duties: Support student learning through braille, technology, home management, shop and cane travel instruction. Reinforce blindness skills learned in Orientation Center classes through assisting students with daily living tasks, meal planning and preparation, laundry, homework, and cleaning and organizing apartments. Assist students in participating in activities in the community such as eating at restaurants, shopping, bowling and rock climbing. Reinforce proper cane technique and other nonvisual skills during these activities. Serve as a role model to students in the use of nonvisual techniques and problem-solving skills. Ensure safety of students by monitoring student behavior and the student living areas. Communicate with other summer program staff regarding student needs and progress. Document student progress including written student reports at the end of the summer. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential functions of this position: Demonstrate and promote a positive philosophy of blindness Monitor student behavior and living areas Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in the English language. Demonstrate proper use of the long White cane Read and write braille Actively participate in all summer program activities Work Schedule: May 29 ? August 16, 2018. Summer youth counselors will work approximately forty hours per week, with the potential for some overtime. Schedules will vary based on assigned duties.
