Hello, I am forwarding on the attached call for male research participants. I am also pasting the call for participants below. I have not yet participated in this research but have corresponded several times with the researcher and am registered to be a participant myself. I don't know about the final outcomes of the research but it sounds interesting to me. CALL FOR RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS My name is Tara Fannon and I'm a third year doctoral student with the Department of Political Science and Sociology at NUI, Galway, Ireland. I live in Brooklyn New York and I'm getting ready to begin my fieldwork in and around NYC and beyond! My research entitled, Personal Narratives of Gender and Disability: Blind and Visually Impaired Men's Accounts of Embodied Selfhood, qualitatively investigates the relationship between gender, disability and visuality, specifically how visual and textual representations of masculinities and disability shape and are shaped by blind and visually impaired men's sensory accounts of body and self. In other words, I'm interested in learning what masculinity and disability means to my participants in their everyday lives and, beyond this, what it's like having a visual disability in a time when visual information, image and aesthetic are considered important in our society. I am currently recruiting males between the ages of 18-75 who are fluent English speakers, permanent residents of the United States currently living in the United States and who identify as visually impaired or blind (from birth or acquired). Participation in this research will entail one in-depth interview lasting up to an hour and possibly one shorter follow-up interview. Interviews can be conducted face-to-face with participants who live in the NYC area or over the phone if preferred. Interviews with participants who live outside the NYC area will take place only over phone because my travel to locations outside NYC is not possible at this time. Face-to-face interview locations will be agreed upon by the participant and researcher and will take place in public spaces provided they are accessible, suitably quiet to ensure a good recording, and private enough to ensure participant comfort. This research is anonymous and confidential. While I'm unable to offer financial compensation for participation, if in the case of face-to-face interviews, water and snacks will be provided. Beyond this, there are multiple, worthwhile benefits to participating in this research that range from exploring completely new areas to growing important and under-researched areas. The OCB is a 30-bed, residential 24/7 program providing vocational rehabilitation services for DOR consumers to support adjustment to blindness, the development of appropriate vocational behaviors, attitudes and interests, and the preparation of participants to achieve independence and gainful employment. The OCB Administrator is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating policies and practices governing the administrative, program/services and facility operations of OCB, managing and leading an interdisciplinary team of professional and non-professional staff, directing and participating in resident consumer development services and processes, and serving as Chair of the Admissions Committee. The OCB Administrator further represents the OCB at meetings with other department divisions, advisory groups and other stakeholders, acts as ex-officio trustee for the American Printing House for the Blind federal quota program, and manages the OCB Trust Fund. The OCB Administrator will participate and contribute to the long- term strategy planning on policy and operational activities as a means to support the preparation of OCB participants to achieve independence and gainful employment and to support the mission of the department. The OCB Administrator reports to the Deputy Director of the Specialized Services Division (SSD) in the DOR. The OCB Administrator position is based in OCB in Albany, California. The successful applicant will have either earned the designation of National Orientation and Mobility Certificant (NOMC) within the NBPCB and/or hold certification in Orientation and Mobility from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP). * Must have demonstrated knowledge of the Structured Discovery philosophy and means by which Orientation and Mobility is integrated as a core programmatic component. * Must demonstrate competency in BRAILLE by scoring 80% on the AIDB Braille Skills Assessment within the first twelve (12) months of employment. * Must illustrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff; consumers and their families; program graduates; peer Orientation and Mobility Specialists; advisory groups; and agencies such as the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services along with contemporary Structured Discovery Programs. * Demonstrated maturity, self-motivation, and the ability to exercise sound judgment. * Must illustrate outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. * Must either possess or develop an understanding of cultures and needs of persons who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, low vision or deafblind, ensuring all actions and decisions demonstrate a respect for and value of persons with sensory loss. * Required extensive vicinity and occasional overnight travel. * The successful applicant must submit to a criminal history background information check including, but not limited to FBI and ABI record repositories. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct Orientation and Mobility assessments, focusing on the Structured Discovery student's long/short-term needs grounded in nonvisual instruction; cognitive problem solving; and concerted strategies for clarifying attitudes and raising expectations surrounding blindness. * Based on said assessment and continued evaluation, provide individualized Orientation and Mobility instruction and consultation for Structured Discovery Program participants. * Prepare lesson plans inclusive of sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs; Individualized Employment Plan and/or Personal Futures Plan; functioning and motivational levels. * Prepare and use equipment and materials for the development of Orientation and Mobility skills, following the Structured Discovery curricula and philosophy. * Document Structured Discovery participant progress daily. * Instruct Structured Discovery students in the development of skills and knowledge which will enable them to travel independently to the highest degree possible based on assessed needs and the participants' evaluation, Individualized Employment Plan and/or Personal Futures Plan. * Assist Structured Discovery participants in travelling to various community locations as necessary to provide meaningful instruction in realistic learning environments until participants achieve the skills to arrange for their own transportation. * Present in-service training to AIDB Birmingham Regional Center and Structured Discovery staff on appropriate Orientation and Mobility techniques as needed. * Participate in the Structured Discovery Strategic Planning process to provide a continuum of services aligning with AIDB's efforts to design innovative instructional programs to meet the unique and changing education and rehabilitation needs of students, consumers and families. * Actively seek ways to educate through effective marketing and positive public relations to enhance and expand the Structured Discovery Program. * Participate in state and national meetings, workshops, presentations, conferences and consumer groups, sharing information learned and best practice methodology to internal/external audiences. * Observe the Code of Ethics of the Orientation and Mobility profession. * Keep abreast of current research and Orientation and Mobility teaching strategies. * Review and update the Structured Discovery Orientation and Mobility curriculum as necessary. * Protect confidentiality of student information while maintaining required records and reports inclusive of data entry into the Gentry Referral Information Net (GRIN). * Demonstrate professionalism in behavior and dress that serves as a role model, setting a good example for Structured Discovery participants and aligning with the AIDB culture. * Attend departmental, inner-agency and campus-wide faculty/committee meetings as assigned. * Perform other duties as assigned. General Description: The essential function of the job is to teach students how to travel safely, efficiently, and independently in their homes, workplaces, community, and beyond. Introduce students to and teach them in the use of non-visual methods and strategies for orientation and mobility. 3. Using the Structure Discovery Method, Provide real world opportunities to practice and reinforce non-visual skills and techniques for safe, efficient, and independent travel. 4. Instruct students in how to safely, locate, detect, and negotiate stairways including ascending/descending, fall prevention/recovery, and checking for hazards. 5. Conduct training in non-visual techniques for safely crossing both controlled and uncontrolled intersections including strategies for negotiating high traffic roadways. 6. Teach students how to safely and effectively utilize public transportation, including: route and trip planning; locating transit stops and transportation hubs; and boarding/exiting busses, trains, airplanes and other vehicles. Instruct students in how to safely and effectively negotiate escalators, elevators, revolving doors, and other challenges encountered when traveling. 7. Teach students how to locate, use, and navigate safely and efficiently busy public facilities such as shopping malls, stadiums, airports, hospitals, college campuses, etc. 8. Create tactile and auditory maps and instruct students in their proper use. 9. Evaluate students' functional, physical and mental capabilities, as related to mobility and orientation. 10. Determine individual students' need for physical conditioning. 11. Stay current in areas of responsibility. 12. Address and conduct workshops for interested groups as requested. Documentation 1. Maintain thorough, complete and timely ongoing weekly and monthly record keeping of client services; including, but not limited to case notes, lesson notes, evaluations, progress reports, and correspondence. 2. Documents immediately and thoroughly any student falls or other accidents that occur during training. Team Building and Networking 1. Present client issues to supervisor and contribute to ongoing problem solving of such issues while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. 2. cute story about training Millennials

I had a student between 18 and 20. He was from a small town and not used to city life so I was training him on para-transit, doing research to locate a place he wanted to go visit and on researching fixed bus routes to the location as well. His smart phone was acting up and he didn't feel confident he could use his normal research methods non-visually with what he had so I took him to an office phone to call directory assistance and the bus company. He started his research and while he was on the phone talking with the lady at Metro, he casually unplugged the handset and walked across the room. It was all I could do not to laugh right in front of him. I connected the handset for him in a hurry so he wouldn't lose his call as I didn't think that was the time to have a lesson in phone mechanics. I don't know if he thought one just needed it plugged in to use the number pad or what but it was totally unexpected. I had to share that with other O&M teachers. In a few years I might change it to she and put it on facebook.
