Merry-Noel Chamberlain has worked in the blindness field for about 30 years, beginning with adult rehabilitation. For the past 25 years, Dr. Chamberlain has been a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments and an Orientation & Mobility Instructor primarily in the public school setting. Dr. Chamberlain has a BS in Elem. Education, a MA in Educational Psychology/O&M, a MA in Special Education/Visual Impairments, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. In addition to holding teacher certification in Elem. Education/Special Education, VI, (birth ? 21), Dr. Chamberlain holds a National Orientation & Mobility Certification (NOMC).
Details:
This presentation will discuss Structured Discovery Cane Travel (SDCT) as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) curriculum which focuses on the foundational techniques necessary to develop future independence for students who are blind or visually impaired. This presentation will explore activities in Dr. Chamberlain?s books The ABCs of Structured Discovery Cane Travel for Children, and Structured Discovery Cane Travel Approach to Orientation and Mobility Concepts. Participants will learn of some tried-and-true skill-building fundamental transformational mobility techniques/activities essential to developing problem-solving mobility independence within natural environments. These activity-based ideas may be used to enhance introduction to and/or assistance with on-going education of comprehending complicated concrete and abstract Orientation and Mobility concepts to help achieve independent mobility.
Participants will Learn:
* The SDCT Curriculum.
* Tried-and-true skill-building fundamental transformational mobility techniques essential to developing problem-solving mobility independence within natural environments.
* Ideas/activities that may be used to enhance introduction to and/or assistance with on-going education of comprehending complicated concrete and abstract Orientation and Mobility concepts to help achieve independent mobility.
Intended Audience:
College professors teaching O&M, O&M instructors, parents of blind children
