This position will primarily consist of teaching orientation & mobility in the adult rehabilitation center with the possibility of teaching braille to adults and O&M to children in the local school districts. Please see the posting below for more information. *Job Summary: *The Orientation and Mobility Specialist/Braille Instructor prepares individuals who are blind/visually impaired to travel independently. The O&M Specialist/Braille Instructor will assist individuals to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, independent, and efficient travel in both familiar and unfamiliar environments. The O&M Specialist/Braille Instructor will provide evaluation/instruction on braille basics to adult rehabilitation clients. *Essential Functions:* The essential functions of the Orientation & Mobility Specialist position consist primarily of, but are not limited to, the following: - Plan lessons that focus on the transferability of skills to diverse environments - Serve on a multi-disciplinary team to determine client centered program plans and progress in the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program (CRS). - Provide orientation & mobility instruction to children, ages 3-21, in the school and community setting. - Provide basic braille instruction to adult clients within a training setting - Instruct students both one on one and in small groups - Stay current in the field by maintaining certification and continued education through conferences and workshops; as well as provide training to other professionals. - Promote a positive outlook of blindness and tools - Conduct orientation and mobility evaluations that focus on short- and long-term needs of the individual. - Formulate goals that directly align with the results of the evaluation and the client?s vocational goal. - Complete monthly reports that detail progress, strengths, and concerns. - Prepare detailed written recommendations for the equipment and/or services that are appropriate to the client's needs and program plan. - Support clients, family, and friends through the process of adjusting to vision loss. - Participate in outreach and serve as a resource to other community organizations. - Supervise and train Orientation & Mobility and blindness Rehabilitation interns. - Maintain list of community resources to make appropriate referrals as needed. - Perform other duties as assigned. *Education and Experience:* - Bachelor's Degree is required.
