Resolution about Structured Discovery in K-12 Schools in State Legislature
Aloha Colleagues,
A set of resolutions was just introduced in the Hawaii State Legislature that urges the Hawaii Department of Education to accept the NOMC for teachers of orientation and mobility, which it currently does not. Have any other state legislatures had any resolutions like this?
Here are the links to the concurrent resolutions, which include links to their non-concurrent companions:

Justin,
Don't know if it'll help, but Dr. Bell and I were involved in a Institute on
Rehabilitation Issues study in the early 2000s on O & M. In it, I believe
NOMC and COMS were identified as equal professional certifications. The
importance is that the IRI is an official publication of the U.S. Department
of Education. In other words, it can be argued that the U.S. Department of
Education recognizes both, so it should not be a stretch for a state to do
the same.
Best,
Fredric K. Schroeder, Ph.D.

Justin,
By this point in our history, it should not take legislation to urge
acceptance of NOMC, as it is pure discrimination at this point. It seems
like it is merely an HR policy that is out dated and needs revising.
Attached is the Louisiana O&M rule on licensure, and this has now been on
our books for about 14 years.

You?d think wouldn?t you? I don?t know about Hawaii but Oklahoma is about 40 years behind the rest of the country. There will be pockets of resistance all over the world for the rest of our lives and for the next several generations. We just have to hang in there and keep passing this information around and doing what we can where we can. Hang in there Justin, he may be walking alone and it sure feels like I am but I know we?re marching together. Sent from my iPhone
