Lee Stanway, GDMI
Lee started at Guide Dogs UK in 1990 as a trainee guide dog mobility instructor (GDMI)and after qualification went onto take on various operational manager roles delivering guide dog services in the North West of the UK. As a GDMI and manager, Lee has always had a great interest in working with people who have additional needs and this led him to learn British sign language for 3 years and taking a degree course in deafblind studies. Lee also became involved in setting up services for people requesting guide dogs that did other roles too, such as a combined guide dog/ seizure alert dog. This involved working with other assistance dog originations in the UK. Lee is also responsible for setting up wheelchair mobility services in the UK and currently advise operational teams in Guide Dogs about supporting people with additional needs.
Details:
The presentation will look at the start of the wheelchair mobility programme in the UK for people wanting a guide dog and then consider how it was expanded to teaching orientation and mobility for wheelchair users. A large part of the programme involved developing a staff training programme that involved experiential learning, encouraging us to see mobility for wheelchair users in a different light. During the presentation we will discuss some of the key skills required by wheelchair users who are visually impaired and above all the difference it has made to the lives of people who have done the training.
Participants will Learn:
? How to engage with people who use a wheelchair in order to best understand their needs in a person centred way and to design an orientation and mobility programme
? How a guide dog can provide an alternative to the long cane for wheelchair users
? How staff training helps provide a consistent and professional approach to wheelchair mobility
Intended Audience:
Staff with a technical background in orientation and mobility training
Anyone who has an interest in developing training programmes for staff
1.5 CEUs will be provided exclusively for Current OMSA members.
