FYI From: Kassy, Allied Independence <theteam at alliedindependenceonline.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 2021 9:38 AM To: Edward <ebell at latech.edu> Subject: Unpopular Opinion: Should you give an NFB cane to a young learner? I watched as my 13 year old student moved faster, in a straighter line, and had more confidence traveling. ? The switch from a rolling tip with a folding cane to a long, white cane was impeccable. ? Was it the cane itself? ? Was it contributed to the Two-Point-Touch technique alone? I had to learn more. ? Soon after, I switched a 7 year old student from a rolling ball tip and folding cane to an NFB cane. ? Given her balance fears, moving as quickly as a sighted peer in her adulthood was never the goal. ? For her, the NFB cane allowed her to move faster between her dorm and her classroom, giving her more academic time and more time to socialize during lunch. ? So many COMS make the mistake of keeping only to what they were taught with a folding cane and forget to look outside of our tiny box. ? Which begs the question- Should you give an NFB cane to a young learner? ? My professional opinion is WHEN IT IS BENEFICIAL- YES. ? * Two-Point Touch technique, when done correctly gives more independence to learners in the long run. * When used correctly, NFB style canes are lighter and provide more information than folding canes (due to the vibrations not having to be disjointed). * NFB canes allow people to walk faster, which in turn leads them to walking a straighter line, which allows for greater accuracy and orientation when traveling. ? A Step Forward, I share more information and how to incorporate the other NFB philosophies of blindfolding and Structured Discovery into your lessons with young learners. ? What?s your opinion?
