Might you all be supportive if we suggested this to our team at the national office?
Replace old language under the heading "Sizing Instructions" with the following:
"As a default, subtract about 3-5 inches from your total height, and use that measurement for your cane. Standing straight, the cane should reach near your nose or eyes. If you need to adjust the size up or down as you feel comfortable, go ahead."

Subject: Re: [Nomc] NFB Free White Cane Application Form: Sizing Instructions
Hey Justin and everyone,
I remember there was some talk a few years ago about changing the recommended sizing on the free white cane form. I believe they may have done this on the early explorer recommendations and BELL order form. I would think they would be open to an adjustment especially if there were a consensus on the recommendation.
I usually subtract about 3-5 inches from the person?s total height. That should put it around the nose. Then, as others have mentioned, they can size up or down as they feel comfortable.
Like Lerone, I have noticed that many COMS are suggesting canes measure just under the chin or to the top of the shoulder at the shortest.

?Hi everyone,
There is something on the NFB Free White Cane program request form that I find a bit off, so I am writing to folks here to ask if this is what the rest of you are doing.
The Free White Cane program application form can be found here: https://freecane.nfb.org/
In the application it reads: Cane Sizing For starter canes: measure to your armpit. Seasoned travelers: measure to your chin or higher.
## If the only cane a person has is one of these heights, and it is not reasonably easy to get a longer one, I am not opposed to working with them, but I personally aim for a cane to reach to some part of their nose. This is achievable for basically everyone because a typical adult nose is at least 2 inches long so that some cane will match this spot.
If this strikes a lot of people as odd, do you think we should try to get the instructions on the form amended?
Aloha,
Justin
